What is Botox ®?

It is an injection of a very dilute solution of Botulinum toxin type A, that has been in use since about 1990.It is one of the fastest growing treatments in the cosmetic surgery industry.                                                                                                                                                    >>UP

 

How does Botox®  work?

Botox acts by blocking the impulse from the nerve to the muscles, related to the lines and wrinkles. The muscles are then relaxed preventing contraction. Facial lines formed by the pull of underlying muscles will then diminish or disappear.

Following treatment with Botox® , the skin over the muscles remains smooth and even while all the untreated areas continue to contract as usual. Where can it be used?

Facial line softening of the upper half of the face:

Forehead furrowing, eye lines (Crows feet), frown lines between the eyes (Glabellar lines), nose wrinkles (Bunny lines), scars.

Creating arched eyebrows and changing eye shape by opening the eye.

Softening smoker’s lines around the lips (reduces lipstick bleeding)

Preventing excessive perspiration.

Is it dangerous?

No. Botox ® injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many opthalmological and neurological disorders. Each year thousands receive Botox® treatment for a variety of conditions and it is quickly becoming a popular treatment for reversing the signs of ageing.

How is the treatment performed?

Botox® treatments are very simple to perform, and usually take less than 5 minutes per area.

Using a tiny micro-needle, a miniscule amount of Botox® is injected very precisely into select facial muscles. The needle is very fine and only a small amount of the substance is used, so pain associated with these injections is minimal.

No sedation or local anaesthetic is necessary.

Are the injections painful?

No, because the needle is so fine and such small quantities are used, the pain is minimal, with temporary discomfort. No local anaesthesia is needed. You may experience some itching or swelling immediately afterwards in the area.

What are the side effects?

Botox® is used in such small quantities that it is not harmful. The most common effect is temporary and localised bruising, slight redness of the skin and occasionally slight swelling at the injection site. Because the effects of Botox® are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only a few hours or up to four days. Temporary bruising is effectively managed with Arnica tablets.

In some cases, the toxin can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles.

In rare cases, there can be a mild drooping of eyelid or eyebrow, or infection at the injection site.

I’m on medication, can I still have it?

Botox® is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Nor if you have an allergy to eggs or albumin. There are certain drugs that interfere with neuromuscular transmission or antibiotics that may increase the effect of Botox®. Please ensure your practitioner is aware of any medications you are taking.

After treatment you should lie down for about 3-4 hours. You should avoid rubbing the area for 72 hours as this could move the Botox® into areas that you don’t want it. So no facials, massages, etc.

How long will it last?

The improvement you will achieve from the procedure will last anywhere up to 3-6 months. You will notice a gradual fading of its effect at which point, you may want to return for a new treatment.

The early clinical studies indicate that the duration of the treatment benefits is increased over time, so that you should require fewer injections in the future. Also the duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for the over 65 years of age.

How will I look afterwards?

The results are amazing, it may take 5 days to see an improvement and 14 days to see the overall effects. The skin will appear smooth and even, showing a youthful glowing appearance.
